Are you inspirational?

It is human nature to look at others around us for inspiration when we can’t find it within.

We often look to celebrities to model our lives on and compare ourselves to. But what if we look a bit closer to home?

At Now, we are committed to finding ways to enable a better life for all. Here are some relatively unknown yet amazingly inspirational stories for you to enjoy and embrace.

Vicki Lackenby

10-year-old Ben’s autism makes it difficult for him to make friends. After he was left devastated when nobody showed up to his last birthday party, Vicki decided to crowdfund to give Ben the best birthday ever. Not only did Vicki raise enough money to buy him an iPad and sensory equipment for his bedroom, Ben received tens of thousands of cards from people all over the world.

Katie Higgins

On Christmas Eve 1990, in Yorkshire, England, Mary Higgins was told her unborn baby was going to have Down syndrome. Her doctor advised a termination. She said no, and five months later a little girl, Katie, was born.

Katie Higgins is now 23. Despite her difficulties, she became a Zumba® instructor. When Katie’s brother died of cancer, she and her mother started taking classes to fight depression. Their instructor, Amanda Laycock, saw something special in Katie and starting giving her special classes on her own. “I just watched with amazement,” Mary remembers. “From then on, there was just no holding Katie back.”

In summer 2012, Katie passed her exams. Today, she teaches classes at Halifax College and Elim church in Sowerby Bridge.

Liz Murray

When Liz became homeless at the age of 15, it was just after her mother died of HIV and her father moved into a homeless shelter. In such a painful situation, most people would only be able to see their immediate circumstances.

But Liz would seek a better reality for herself, despite her intense limitations. So she attended a local high school and graduated in just two years.

She was then awarded a New York Times scholarship for needy students and was accepted into Harvard University, eventually earning her doctorate in clinical psychology.

She has since written a New York Times best-selling memoir “Breaking Night: A Memoir of Forgiveness, Survival, and My Journey from Homeless to Harvard” which was also made into a TV movie.
